Performance Physio, Fitness and Sports runs a sport specific athletic development program.  This is an opportunity for young athletes to learn how to safely build an athletic, injury free body and prepare physically for competition.

 

The program involves working with athletes on a regular basis to set-up complete sport specific physical training programs.  The program begins with a musculoskeletal screening to identify past injuries, areas of weakness and to assess posture, flexibility and core stability. 

  

The Five cornerstones of the Athletic Development Porgram are as follows:

  

(1) Address areas of concern

These are identified in the screening and involves a Prehabilitation Program including flexibility exercises such as stretching, joint range of movement techniques and self massage and trigger points and strengtheing exercises to improve posture and core stability.

  

(2) Learn the technical fundamentals

For long term success in athletic development it is imperative that athletes learn the technical fundamentals in the gym.  This starts with the core exercises. 

  

(3) Appropriate progressions based on readiness

To improve athleticism, programs must be progressed.  Progressions can be made in the form of increased resistance, increased range of exercise, altering training overall loads, advanced techniques, increasing complexity of movement or increasing stabilising demands.  These progressions can only be made when the athlete is technically sound, psychologically ready and has an appropriate training history.

  

(4) Train the physical capabilities required by the sport

Every sport is different and specificity of training principles to be adhered to.  Training should reflect the physiological capacities required by the sport such as strength, power, speed and agility or endurance, the work to rest ratio of the sport and the movement patterns.  All young athletes need to build a general base and then become more specific with their training.

  

(5) Evidenced based

Our programs are based on evidence.  The philosophy and programs have been developed highly qualified and experienced professionals supported by research and years of success with elite athletes.    

 

The long term aim with all athletes is to educate and promote ownership of their own development so as they age athletes have learnt to train independently.
